After the first night of riots, nothing seems to be changing and the
tension, in Tallinn, start to be really high from the early afternoon.
The balance of the night is less dramatic than the previous one, but
has to be said that some small protest started to appear also in the
north-west of the country, especially in some cities where the Russians
own the majority of the population.
More than 300 people has been arrested and brought by the police in some barracks close to the Terminal D - the part of the harbor where is possible to get the ferry for Helsinki. We have been collecting histories, pictures and videos of what is happened on those nights in those barracks that we also had the chance to visit: as soon as all the material will be collected and well defined, we will publish it in this page in order to make the whole EU know about what is happened for real in Estonia.

Thank you to Giovanni and all the Babelians in Tallinn for this great work. We really appreciate your passion in reporting about one of the most important street movements in last days Europe. Go on but be careful!
Dear Giovanni,
I keep my fingers crossed for you! It looks like Estonia (David) is fighting Russia (Goliat), so I hope you will win this confrontation! Russian speakers behave as if they were Russian agents and not Estonian citizens, and Kremlin is responsible for the manifestations in Moscow and in Estonia! So, keep on! Best from Poland.
Piotr
Nice job! You really have it and from the right side. It is true that Russian behavior is out of hands and they've been acting like Estonia still is in the Soviet Union. Too bad that we still have some politicians who doesn't support Estonian goverment as they should. (You may know I'm talking about our own Edgar Savisaar). Anyway, keep on the good work and let's hope that everything will work out well! And be careful on the streets, especially on the 9th of May. Good luck.
Thank you, dear Giovanni, for your courage. Try to find the reasoned activist of the russian side and you'll see that their motivation is destructive. The only reason of their action is the hate brought by the Kremlin media. If you disagree, try to answer two questions. Is the big part of the arested people "guests" in Estonia, or do they live there permanently? Why the official delegation of russian Putin's parliament refused to participate in the public press conference?
Those, who understand russian can even hear the "clever" guys encouraging drunk russian youngsters to "go and ruin the police building" in your footage.
I'm sorry but I strongly disagree with what you have written in your comment.
About residents or guests: we both know how complicated is the situation here and maybe we have different views on the same topic. For me no matter which passport you own: if you are born in Estonia, grown up in Estonia, paying taxes in Estonia, you cannot be considered as a guest.
I would also say that would be a bit too easy to read the whole crisis as the result of Kremlin propaganda: I guess we would also underestimate the intelligence of a lot of people who has been peacefully protesting.
Then, just last point, the guy you refer to, the white haired one who is saying in Russian to go to burn the police station is just provoking the guys and explaining them that they shouldn't loot nor attack any shop.
I know him and we actually have total different views - he's one of the most famous Russian activists here - but we are soon going to publish his interview.
As a political scientist I'm a bit trained to read behind lines and, wanting to be bad, I can even find many more reasons of what is happened on both sides...the incoming elections or the always strong opposition to NATO for Russia...or the chance of becoming the Baltic leader or redefining the borders on the Baltic Sea with Finland, closing its access to Russia for Estonia..
The "guests" were not born in Estonia. They are not even living there. They came a week ago from Russia to protest "against Estonian government". Open your European eyes and watch what is going on in Moscow inside the Estonian embassy. It is the question for the whole Europe. Are the drunk Putin's guys ruining the Estonian embassy in Moscow FROM THE INSIDE the NORM in Europe? What do you prefer, the Vienna convention, or the Putin's dictatorship. Come on, wake up!!!!
You have already told everybody that the white hair guy is your friend. So it's time to publish his interview. Come on, ruin Estonian democracy in English. Have you talked with any of Estonians? Why dont you answer the question about russian members of parliament I gave before? Why they refused to talk in the press conference?
Is it not ridiculuos for you that members of Putin's parliament ARE COMING TO ESTONIA TO INVESTIGATE THE "HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION" in Tallinn, while russian police is arresting thousands of peaceful protesters in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Just compare the facts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey,
I still disagree with you...it's true that some people comes here just for fighting - mainly the second day - but would be too much to say that they were all - or in the majority - "guests".
But about the situation in Moskow - and St. Pet. - You're totally right: there also must be a reason why the whole EU officially spoke against what is happening there while is still taking time and getting more info on what's happened here before giving a real support to Estonia - I would remind that the call between Solana and Ilves cannot be considered as an official step from the Union.
Then, I never said that that man is a friend: and the reason why I didn't do it is just because is not.
I'm a journalist, he's representative of something here and so it's my job to find and ask him his opinion; the reason why his interview is not here still is because we are waiting to have more Estonian opinions and point of views in order to balance everything.
About the DUMA delegation then, they didn't come cause the meeting at the police station lasted more than expected: I was at the MInistry of Foreign affairs and I know how many problems they had to organize the press conference so, once more, it's totally normal that they missed it.
Has been a shame, is true, but we don't have to see any political game on that.
Then, I might agree with you saying that they're not the right persons for having any kind of talk on human rights...but also Estonia got its problems...I guess Amnesty Int. can be considered a neutral observer - surely not a pro-putin one - and I would racomend you their March report on human right and minority policies in Estonia.
But, seriously, I'm not pro Russian, if this is what you want me to say.
We are working on it..by monday we'll start with some Estonian academics...personally I really believe in the support they can give to the discussion..even if so often they prefer to stay silent :/
Ah, and I forgot one thing! You asked me about Kadri and, sure, she's a babelian too...and a really professional one!!
Perhaps you did not entirely understood what that Russuan man is saying - he is telling youngsters to GO to the police and NOT to ruin the police building. He's trying to stop them...
Please don't blame only Putin and Russian foreign policy in what happenned in Estonia. Obviously Russia is trying to use the situation for their profit. Try to ask yourself a question - WHY these awful things happenned? You have any versions?
