I almost agree with you.

It is true that the VAT is a good incentive in Estonia but I do not see the dynamism you see in and around Tallinn. Sometimes I tend to witness too much improvisation in the way people do business in Estonia and I do not find it extremely encouraging, especially when I look at it from a foreign investor perspective.

True, the induct created by touriusm is more than significant - a bit in decline tho? - but the country need foreign capital to flow again and more, and I think I would be less optimist than you on rating the Government in this sense.
That is also why, months ago, I wrote few lines about the crisis saying that we would have all felt it after the Season as, once tourists are not in Old Town / Spas anymore, then we start realize how much money is really circulating in the country.

As an American who owns a flat and has a wife in Tallinn, I feel that things are much better in Tallinn and Estonia than here in USA. I think that the economy in Estonia is driven much more by tourism , seasonally, and the potential for profits in that industry, ie, tourism and services is great.

The 18.5 % VAT is a good way to generate much needed revenues for infrastructure improvements, and I see very good projects in and around Tallinn. The new hiking and recreational trails in and around Pirita-Kose, and the nature trails and tourist areas are good examples of tax payer dollars being used effectively. I am happy to live in tallinn, rather than USA, because of the progressive government there.

"ccording to both scenarios, the Estonian economy should pick up again in 2010."
> we ll see... 6 months ago nobody forecasted such a scenario, so who knows what will happen in 2010?

"at the end of 2009 or at the beginning of 2010" hehe yes and in 2 months they ll change their minds and say they expect the economy to recover in 2011...
in the same kind of predictions, remember how many times the date of the adoption of the euro has been changed !
Nobody is even able to predict what will happen to Estonia in the next couple of months, so first let"s see if the country and the Swedish banks can survive the crisis. I think forecast are now useless, but it s good to see good news among the tons of bad stuff happening around us!

Which are the 13 EU countries experiencing a sizable population growth in the next 50 yars?

Europe's population grows a mere 0.25 percent with immigration making up for a negative population growth.

Europe's population is also by far the world's oldest, with the median age more than 10 years higher than the world average.

The Estonian dilemma is in fact valid for the whole continent!

I agree, people should keep waiting for a bit for getting - at least!- closer to somen honest prices.

The way R.E. behaves in here has been object of a deep personal criticism and I often proposed some measures for regulating the market - sometimes even using France and Belgium as examples.

Personally I do not cry knowing that some companies had to close nor discovering that a broker can lower the price by 20/30% if you ask him once you are visitng the flat.

I remember when they tried to fool me for my being a foreigner and I remember how I had to refuse some ordinary flats just because of the crazy way prices had been rising.

Now I feel almost like it is finally my turn.
And, as you suggested, I am waiting. :))

strange forecast... the IMF says 3% for 2008, and of course Estonian authorities and banks are expecting, I thik too much with approx. 6%. Let's talk about stabilisation instead of recession. Why is everybody so pessimistic all the time? only talking about crisis, recession, losses, debts. There are also some companies doing well and some positive things in Estonia!
